6th March 1948: to Wenban's for sight testing

6 Sat. Very cold, dull, becoming rather mild & sunny by afternoon but a thick, smoky fog soon blotted out the sun. Gwennie called with the ration book and later with Margaret in her pram. To Wimbledon along rail-path which is being concreted; saw Pacific loco. “Yeovil”. Went to make an appointment at Wenban’s* to get my sight tested. Cousin Maud called: she had to get home to Streatham in the fog.

*Note: Mr A T Wenban, a retired optician living in Eastbourne, died on 9th Feb 1948. ('London Gazette'.) He had previously lived and/or practised at 36, The Broadway, Wimbledon. The Museum of Wimbledon has sports medals donated by the same person.
